Chronic
Hives and How Their Causes are Diagnosed

The causes of chronic hives cannot be always easily diagnosed. This medical condition formally know as chronic
urticaria is readily determined in case of acute or physical hives, but often the sufferers might have to undergo
many different tests that still might not show the reason for the problem. The symptoms of the chronic and the
standard condition do not vary in any way. Certain skin areas are covered with red and white welts that are itching
and painful and often form clusters.
The chronic hives (urticaria) differ from the standard ones in two ways. The condition lasts very long normally
more than sixe weeks. Furthermore, it will keep appearing it until the underlying causes for it are fond and
treated effectively.
In the majority of cases the urticaria is a result of an allergic reaction the allergen that triggers it has to be
found. However, there are more serous causes of the condition that have to be determined through more specific
testing. The person suffering from chronic hives can have a more serous problem such as lupus, a disease associated
with the thyroid gland or even an autoimmune condition or disorder.
Still, in most cases the standard allergy tests will be performed firs by a medical specialist in this field. If
these do not show any significant result, which is quite probable to occur, the sufferer is usually asked to adopt
the so called elimination diet.
Often the physicians can make an educated guess on the type of allergen that may trigger the chronic hives and ask
you to exclude a specific type of food or product form your meals. The truth is that the cause for the condition
may not be the exact food, but additives that can be found in a large number of processed products.
The elimination diet is a time consuming test, but it usually provides effective results and a specific food or
additive intolerance is discovered. If this method does not work then skin and other specialized tests might be
necessary. These are usually carried out to determine the possible allergens that the skin may have been in contact
with in the hours and days before the hives appear.
There are cases in which the causes of the chronic urticaria are never determined with certainty. This should not
be a reason for desperation. The condition can be effectively controlled and the symptoms relieved with the use of
a range of reliable medical and home remedies.
