What are Skin Hives? And How to Treat Them Yourself

Skin hives (also known as hives and urticaria) are normally associated with an allergic reaction. Skin hives normally appear as lots of raised itchy red bumps over the body. Sometimes they can appear as red welts and wheels which can often look like ring worm (urticaria).

Skin hives can appear on any part of the body in either patches restricted to one location or they can cover the whole of the body at once. However, it is usual to have skin hives on the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet.

Skin hives can appear for a number of reasons, most associated with an allergic reaction of some description. Other reasons for developing skin hives may range from over exposure to the sunlight, extreme cold, exercise, heat and stress.

Doctors will often find it hard to pin down the actual cause of any specific cause of skin hives. The treatment of skin hives is usually by means of antihistamine, which stop the development of excessive histamine, which cause the skin hives to appear.

Other forms of medication used to treat skin hives are steroids, creams and cortisone injections, however, the injections are normally only used as a last resort.

How to Treat Skin Hives Yourself.

There are ways on which you can treat skin hives yourself.

For those suffering with chronic hives and who have already been prescribed H1 antihistamine by their doctor, taking H2 over the counter antihistamine in conjunction with the prescribed will often offer much better results than just taking one or the other.

Supplementing all your normal daily drinks with un-sweetened green tea can also help as it is one of the the best natural antioxidants available and will help the body dispers toxins which act as allergen triggers.

Apply cold wet towels or cool packs to the affected areas. This will stop the itching and discomfort and help speed up the healing process.
