What are the reasons for Urticaria?
Acute Urticaria
The most likely reason for Acute Urticaria is an allergic reaction due to exposure to pets, horses, latex rubber,
food like shellfish, nuts, egg and dairy foods or bee and wasp stings.
Allergies to medicine like antibiotics ( penicillin ), blood pressure tablets, codeine and aspirin containing
discomfort killers can cause acute urticaria.
Often viral infections like glandular fever and hepatitis B, or bacteria ( helicobacter, streptococci ), fungal and
parasitic infections can trigger urticaria.
Papular urticaria is the correct term for itchy bumps or grouped urticarial abrasions seen especially in youngsters
and which follow insect bites from midges, fleas and mosquitoes.
Chronic Urticaria
The reason for Chronic Urticaria is far more tricky to identify. Food additions like salicylate, sodium benzoate,
sulphites, colourings and nitrites may perform a part.
We frequently finish up diagnosing Chronic Urticaria as being Idiopathic (no identifiable reason). This condition (
which can endure for many years ) is because of the production of auto-antibodies which in turn attack Mast Cells
in our skin and tissues causing a big release of histamine.
Sadly over half of Chronic Urticaria cases are due to production of these auto-antibodies to the IgE and its
receptor on Mast Cells found in the skin ; therefore there's a possible relationship to underlying autoimmune
sicknesses.
Stress is understood to worsen urticaria and stress reduction measures are really vital in treating lingering
urticaria.
Physical Urticaria
Physical urticaria can be caused by physical factors like exposure to environmental heat, extreme cold, the sun,
vibration or stress on the skin ( often from tight clothing ). Urticarial wheels sometimes last less than 60
minutes.
Exercise and sweating may cause a fine itchy rash called Cholinergic Urticaria. Aquagenic Urticaria is the name
given to a condition where the sufferer is allergic to water.
